WHAT IS THE
GREAT BARRIER REEF?
Located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland Australia, GBR is a coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs
It is the largest living structure on earth and can even be seen from space
It is 1 of 7 natural wonders of the world
The reefs are actually made of of tiny living organisms called polyps. The reef are formed when polyps come together and build on one another. The result is a colony of polyps that actually act as one organism.
More than half of the oxygen we breathe today comes from marine plants, such as algal, sea-grass and sea-weed. A large portion of those marine plants come from the GBR.
GBR protects people from 81 countries who live along the coast, by shortening the tides
Due to marine pollution, the GRB has lost half of it's coral cover and is now endangered
Helps restore habitats for endangered turtles and seabirds
Helps innovate research to bring reef coral back to health
Helps power a Reef Rangerbot to plant coral and rebuild reefs
